Live vs online casino – what’s the difference?

Since the first games of chance surfaced centuries ago, the way we play casino games in the modern day has drastically developed.

The first recorded games of Roulette and Blackjack date back to the 1700s, and dice date back even further – to Ancient Egypt.

With this, it’s easy to be impressed as to how the digital age has kept these traditional games alive, with technological advancements paving the way for the online casino gaming we know today.

Online casinos first opened their virtual doors between 1994 and 1996. Not long after this came the Internet, which brought about a whole new era of online casino gaming – live casinos.

So, what’s the difference between live casino and digital games online? Read on to find out!

Online casino games

Online casino games cover all the digital games you can find at an online casino site which you can play independently.

No dealer is hosting these games, but computer software known as a Random Number Generator (RNG) keeps outcomes fair and unpredictable from behind the scenes.

You can play digital versions of most traditional casino games online, such as Roulette, Blackjack, and Poker, alongside different variations and themed versions of these casino classics.

Online slot games are also available to play at many gaming sites – often making up over half of the virtual casino floor.

You may also find games of chance like Bingo, Lotteries, and virtual scratch cards online.

Live casino games

Live casino games, also known as live dealer games, involve a specially designed studio and a real-life professional dealer.

Advanced technology, such as Optical Camera Recognition (OCR) and a Game Control Unit (GCU) make up just some of the elements allowing live gameplay to be streamed directly to your device.

A monitor allows the host to see what bets you decide to place, so they can act accordingly, either dealing the cards or spinning the wheel just as they would in a land-based establishment.

High-definition cameras will pick up each detail from within the studio, allowing you to see the action from your screen.

What’s the difference?

Whilst both digital casino games and live dealer games can be played at your chosen casino online in real-time, there are some key differences between the two:

Online casino games rely on a Random Number Generator to display the outcome, whereas live dealer games – occasionally also utilising RNG software – are hosted by a real-life, professionally trained dealer, and gameplay is live-streamed directly to your device.

Both types of online gameplay see a range of unique themes and game types to choose from. You could opt to play digital Roulette, or experience the game live, and watch a dealer spin the wheel.

Your personal preferences will help you decide your favourite way to enjoy games of chance online.

Do you think you’d prefer spinning the wheel, or reels, yourself, or would you like to see how live casino games can replicate the real-time dealer experience you’d get from a brick-and-mortar casino?
