What is the definition of computer vision and how does it work?

To better understand, let’s imagine the following scene: you are playing football and you are kicking.  The goalkeeper defends.  A simple context for humans, but extremely complex for computers.

The brain processes the image, recognizes the ball, its trajectory, size, perhaps weight, and the goalkeeper moves in the right direction and at the right speed for defense.  It is extremely difficult to teach a machine all this with the help of combinations and mathematical formulas.  This is the role of Computer Vision.

We know that human vision works by analyzing the image that reaches the retina and is sent to the visual cortex.  This will take an image with other images already classified in the brain to determine the object, approximate size, and what to do with it.  An important detail: all this happens in small fractions of a second.

Computer vision is completely based on human vision and works with the process of modeling and reproducing this vision using state-of-the-art software and hardware.

Application examples

Applications of computer vision range from medicine to industrial robotics.  In medicine, image processing of microscopy, radiography, angioplasty, ultrasound, tomography and magnetic resonance imaging allows for more accurate diagnoses of patients.

On the other hand, in industry, computer vision seeks to provide quality and position calculation, as well as part orientation for a robotic arm.

Also, computer vision is actively used in military applications.  But only some of them can be seen by the public, as they are often secret.  They are designed to timely detect danger, such as enemy missiles.

Autonomous vehicles are also making extensive use of this new technology.  Because they are required to have a level of autonomy that varies from full to partial, the latter is only used for driving assistance in certain situations.  In the case of full autonomy, navigation uses computer vision to determine the location, create contextual maps and detect obstacles.  Meanwhile, this technology has not yet reached sufficient maturity to be on the market.

Until recently, exploitation of this type of technology was impossible due to the sheer amount of computation required.  With advances in computing technology, we are seeing a boom in the use of systems that mimic the way the brain works in an undeveloped way, using machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies.
