Microsoft looks likely to be entering the m-payments race, with various sources reporting that the company has applied for money transmission licences in all 50 US states and that it has demoed a tap to pay solution at the WinHEC conference for Windows developers in China.
The company refuses to make any comment, but it is believed that the service will use NFC and Host Card emulation. So far it has received approval from the State of Idaho.
The move would take Microsoft into the realms of m-payment in a similar vein to Apple Pay. But Apple Pay penetration remains low at around 2% in the US, where it is in use.
