Portugal’s telecom regulator to auction frequency bands for 5G before June, says GlobalData

With Portugal’s regulator ANACOM planning to allocate 5G spectrums in 2020 and major mobile network operators (MNOs) such as NOS and Vodafone Portugal already engaged in technical trials, GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, expects commercial 5G to launch in 2020.

GlobalData’s report, ‘Portugal Mobile Broadband Forecast’, reveals that Portugal’s mobile 5G subscriptions will reach 5.3 million by 2024.

Tomasz Kulinski, Senior Technology Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The range of frequencies offered is currently an essential range used globally in 5G network launches. Sub-1GHz frequencies such as the 700MHz band are useful for achieving widespread coverage. The 1-6GHz bands provide balanced benefits for coverage and bandwidth, as the latter grows with higher frequencies.”

The upcoming auction will also cover spectrum in bands such as 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2.1GHz and 2.6GHz, which are beneficial not only for 5G services, but also for the provision of mobile broadband services on the other technology generations.

Kulinski adds: “The allocation of the 700MHz band requires a migration of digital terrestrial TV (DTT), which currently occupies these frequencies, to new frequency bands. In December 2019, ANACOM signed an agreement with the National Association of Councils (Associação Nacional de Freguesias – ANAFRE) to support local communities’ DTT migration to new band of frequencies, in order to release the 700MHz band for 5G services. The migration will be completed by 30 June 2020.”
