    Rob Johnson: Telecom2 still winning in the changing world of telemedia

    Psychology Graduate, Playboy London Casino Croupier, Marketing Manager for David Sullivan, Chairman of Telecom2 Rob Johnson discusses how telemedia has changed – and in many ways hasn’t changed at all – not least with carrier billing getting linked to social media advertising

    Who are you and what is your current role?

    Rob Johnson; Chairman of Telecom2 Ltd with an emphasis on sales and marketing.

    Which countries or regions do you feel represent the greatest opportunity for telemedia services?

    The UK remains a great market. Spain and Eire are seeing good growth within the right services, when utilising the right promotions.

    Which content and/or applications do you see being the most likely to benefit from telemedia billing and/or marketing technologies?

    We have come a long way with telemedia – graduating from basic voice services onto ringtones, logos and beyond to sophisticated competition platforms and complex IVR setups. However, in other ways, things never change. Adult is always going to be there; psychic will always work when the customer is given value. So, all that really evolves are the billing methodologies and the points of promotion. We’re currently seeing social media promotions linked to carrier billing and credit card coming to the forefront.

    Do you think that Direct Carrier Billing can become mainstream and in which markets?

    Yes, and in all markets with the USA being a possible exception. How the most sophisticated democracy in the world can be so far behind on telemedia is a mystery to me.

    What are the key drivers and inhibitors for growth?

    One-click billing will be key for driving growth. Anomalies in the way various networks treat the same projects, and discrepancies between Android and IOS are the main growth inhibitors.

    Do you see affiliate marketing being a primary, trusted channel for telemedia propositions or do you think alternative routes to market will become more popular?

    Affiliate marketing with revenue share was invented by the adult markets in as early as 2000. If you went to the recent shows in Vegas, you would have seen Internext Adult Webmaster shrunk to one room in the Hard Rock, whereas the Affiliate Marketing show fills the Paris hotel and has a real buzz to it. Traditional media will always be there, but affiliate traffic will grow and grow in the coming decade.

    What are they likely to be?  

    Social media marketing with secure payment links within the live chat environment will see stellar growth in the coming decade. RCS media is one to watch with a few ifs and buts, like the co-operation of Apple.

    How likely is it that crypto currencies will become popular telemedia/mobile payment mechanisms for premium content, services and applications?

    Your words of wisdom: On a more personal level, what is the most inspiring piece of advice that has seen you through a life in business to this day and who gave that advice to you?

    When you wake up in the morning always check yesterday’s stats, and always make sure you get paid on time.
